Gothic Revival buildings are today a dynamic venue for arts, shopping and entertainment.
More than forty studios, galleries and specialty shops are open seven days, as well as numerous theatres, cinemas, cafes, restaurants and bars. Every weekend an Art, Craft and Produce Market features more than eighty stalls selling New Zealand made products, and the International Food Fair offers delicious tastes from around the world.
There's plenty of visible artistic activity on site. Dont miss the Artists Quarter, a block of eight working craft studios situated on the ground floor of the Old Chemistry building where you can watch artists at work, talk to them about their craft and purchase their products.
Must-see historical features include the Den of Nobel prize-winning scientist Ernest Lord Rutherford, the Great Hall and the Townsend Observatory, which contains a working telescope.
The Arts Centre is open 7 days a week. Free guided tours available from Arts Centre Information.
